The Cape Breton Farmer's Market is very sorry to share with you the news of the sudden passing of Mountain Meadow Farm's Jeremy Frith.
Jeremy was born June 3, 1945, on another beautiful island, Bermuda. He travelled the world looking for the location of his dream farm, which he established on Cape Breton's North Shore.
Jeremy was a passionate organic farmer, poet , storyteller, singer, actor and Elder of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church. Jeremy is survived by his wife, our fellow marketeer, Sue, his children Josiah, Alec, and stepdaughter Laura.
At the market Jeremy will always be fondly remembered for his charm, wit, and keen perception; his delicous produce, and the twinkle in his eye.
In spite of a major snowstorm and challenging driving conditions, St. Andrew's Church at North River on St. Anne's Bay was filled to capacity for Jeremy's funeral on December 12th.
Don Black of Nova Scotia Farmers' Markets Co-op was in attendance as well as Charles MacDonald of the Cape Breton Farmers' Market. All were impressed with the unique features of the service. There was a marvelous photo display of Jeremy with his livestock, surrounded with the clothes and tools of the farmer, gardener and forester that he was. In addition to his family, two of Jeremy's brothers were in attendance and each spoke eloquently and warmly about their brother's life.
The sermon by the local minister expressed the gratitude of the congregation for Jeremy's contribution to St. Andrew's as an Elder and for his committed involvement in the community of North River. The St.Andrew's Church congregation provided a generous lunch after the service, which gave all an excellent opportunity to share their own stories and their sadness at the sudden death of a valued neighbour and friend. It was impressive to see the fine casket that was crafted in Jeremy's barn by his neighbors. It was made from local lumber with sturdy handles for the many people who assisted in bringing the remains to the church and to its final resting place. Jeremy was interred on his own property -- the Mountain Meadow Farm. |
